#305:

Come to think of it, I think I never gave final character rankings for CS3. I gave them during like... Chapter 3 but never after that. Generally dividing them up by New Class VII/Old Class VII/Other because it doesn't feel fair to give the in-prior-games crew that advantage and separating it out is not only nigh impossible for me but it feels unfair in the opposite direction because the game clearly leans on those pasts.

New Class VII: Altina > Ash > Juna > Musse > Kurt

Altina wins this pretty cleanly. Her story and arc were the highlight of the new group. Ash/Juna are pretty close but I'll give Ash the nod because once you start getting beyond the persona he presents normally he's pretty fascinating and a cool guy. Juna is just generally good throughout. Musse is a ways below those two but has enough interesting stuff about her when she's not running her Rean shtick into the ground. God, it's almost like Falcom heard the Elise complaints from fans and were like "y'all want to see a character that actually exhibits that hyperbole?" Meanwhile Kurt is just there lol. He's like the Elliot of the crew if you removed Elliot's family. Which is to say no one.

Old Class VII: Not giving a ranking but more just placing them in broad categories.

Improved: Fie, Sara, Rean, Millium
About the same: Jusis, Laura, Elliot, Machias, Emma, Gaius
YOU FAILED YOUR INSPECTION: Alisa

Kind of self-explanatory. Those are all relative to my post-CS2 opinions though, for better or worse, and not an actual tier thing. Like Fie was already #1 or #1a with Jusis at that point. Jusis may have been jumped by Sara here, not sure. Alisa, as the sole person I think went down, will get a bit more explanation. Up until the Gral of Erebos appears, I think they leaned too hard into the relationship angle... and I say that as someone who likes Alisa and has no real issue with that pairing! I will note that she seems very set-up to get tons of development in CS4 with Sharon and Alberich and really the Gral itself and her reactions to those two and having an Orbal Gear halted the downward momentum and pointed her back in the right direction so I'm optimistic about her going forward. And since I threw up a spoiler tag already I'll note that Gaius basically took the CS1 Emma role here and should also be positioned well for CS4.

Other: There's too many so I'll just give some general thoughts. Aurelia is the GOAT. Sharon benefited. Rutger was great. Campanella I don't think I can judge objectively because I really disliked his voice so I want to say he dropped like a rock but he's probably the same as always. Arianrhod and the Stahlritter were good at usual. Lechter and Claire were great. Randy I feel was robbed a bit but then he was probably my favorite character in Crossbell and damn near made a run at deuteragonist in Ao so I mean he was going to take a backseat by necessity but eh. Tio was in a similar position but was a more proper guest character so it was more understandable. Tita was in this weird place where it felt like there was Tita the support character (Working as mission control with Schmidt, talking about Liberl/Sky) who was good and Tita the student who was like... a non-presence if that makes any sense. Shirley was an... interesting case. She was a way more interesting character in Ao where her psychopathy was on full display so seeing her more grounded was... odd. I definitely think she suffers if you lack that experience with her though because it makes moments in CS3 where she goes "that's a bit too much, y'all [Osborne and Alberich] need to chill" a lot more impactful knowing that she's the one saying it. OTOH it's actually kind of hilarious to think that becoming an Enforcer actually mellowed her out.

Also this has nothing to do with CS3 but because I am basically hardwired to manually add the HTML tags here at this point I have to know if they still work that way. They don't on the preview box so I fixed it for the spoiler tags because that'd be a massive uh-oh if they didn't. So <s><i>This</i> is a test.</s>
