It offers the chance for them to talk about games that people may enjoy that have no chance of winning any category they may do, and also let's them talk negatively about things without having to get into an argument of "this is worse than this" which can be fun to listen to but probably makes the tone of GotY more negative than they want. All that said, I just wish there was a way it could be condensed into two days rather than three.
