In 2016, Trump went all-in on Hillary winning the nomination (by talking up Bernie at all opportunities) knowing that if Bernie won the nomination Trump probably lost no matter what. Trump is in a tougher position now because he thinks that while Bernie is still the strongest Dem nominee, he also thinks that he can beat him (or any of the others).
