I've heard a lot of Utawarerumono hype from many quarters, perhaps most notably with some pretty heavy overlap from Trails fans I have mixed feelings about the way the Trails fanbase talks about Utawarerumono. I think it's true that they appeal to a similar niche within the gaming community, but I think any actual similarities between the two are a bit overblown. At the end of the day Utawarerumono feels a lot like a Fire Emblem game with a heavier emphasis on story and characters, and Fire Emblem isn't really a series I'd compare to Trails at all*. Though it is probably true that one could reasonably recommend all 3 of the above to gamers who are looking for RPG's with strong characters/story and have some kind of political aspect to them. Particularly though I often see Utawarerumono recommended as a series with comparable worldbuilding to Trails which I think is just untrue no matter how you look at it. Utawarerumono still fantastic though so definitely play it. *This is based on Path of Radiance which is the only FE game I've played. --- Oh woops.
