Think of it like the flu or a cold. It effects folk differently. My brother for example refers to the common cold as "man flu" simply because it effects him seemingly a lot more than the average person. Personally I think he exaggerates too much.

A lot of people call it man flu or man cold and I think because stereotypically a lot of men act so miserable and helpless when sick where as back in the day and somewhat still today a house wife couldnt get away with that shit she still had to take care of the kids and cook meals so they where more acustomed to just dealing with it.

Granted a lot of men just dealt with it too but I bet that was a lot more of the men that couldn't afford to take time off work. Long story short give a person an excuse to slack off and be lazy and they will play it up.
