Seems more like they're spinning the "what's really popular in anime these days?" roulette, and landing on Rebuild of Evangelion without realizing that the hardcore fans hated the Rebuilds.

Hello I guess I am a hardcore Eva fan, at least in that Ive watched the series and all the films numerous times and actively engaged with the fans for years.

I do not think that is an accurate statement regarding opinions towards Rebuild. We have to look at it film by film though:

1.11 - Minor differences, hints that it is actually a sequel rather than a remake. Well-liked by the fandom.

2.22 - Mostly the same with significant differences, hints become a lot more obvious. Beloved by the fans, seen right up there with EoE as the peak of the franchise.

3.33 - Totally different other than a few key points, skips right over key story beats they set up, completely changes the story, setting, characterisations and themes from both the series and the previous Rebuilds. Wildly divisive if not outright disliked by the fans.

Dont take my word for it though, just look at the difference in imdb score between 2 and 3:

I have been thinking about the Rebuilds a lot in regards to these spoilers (which I have largely avoided specifics on, but I know the gist). People didnt turn on Rebuild because it went in a different direction or was a stealth sequel rather than a remake. Thats all in 2.22 and they love that. They turned on it because it abandoned what the franchise was about and seemed to actively spurn what the films had set up and built. Of course, Rebuild was always clear that it would diverge since its announcement, but not the sequel thing.

The kind of story FFVII Remake evidently wants to tell can absolutely be done well. They just better hope that they land on Evangelion 2 and not Evangelion 3.
