IIRC This one weirdo inserted his own OCs into the story then when he left (or got fired) he continued writing them

and it was legal because apparently he didn't sign any documents saying they were Sega propery or they got lost or something

so yea, OCs in official stuff happen if the writers are ascended fans
You're talking the Ken Penders situation, where it shows you how little SEGA and Sonic Team gave a shit about the comic when they couldn't produce the basic paper work that let keep the characters he came up with under his tenure as lead writer.

But like shoving OCs into the comic isn't anything new. It's been done for almost 30 years this point. Good Lord especially echidnas under Ken Penders. That was just the ones that were related to Knuckles. And during that time period, it wasn't exactly people who had grown up making Sonic OCs writing and drawing for the comic. That wouldn't come until Ken was finally gotten rid of for Ian Flynn in the mid 2000's.

But even then, none of the comic characters ever got a hint of being in the games. Not even super popular ones like Sally from the original Saturday morning cartoon that lived on in the comics.

So yeah to me this seems like a huge win for that community.
