And I'm not talking the CAC from Sonic Forces, although apparently that's where the character originated. A person who used to draw Sonic OCs on Tumblr eventually got hired to draw actual Sonic characters for their comic book. She got together with the writer for the comic and create this character called Whisper the Wolf and they introduced into the comic two years ago.

Now keep in mind Sonic comics have been around since like 1992, with Archie publishing them up until 2017 and then IDW taking over. There's a shit ton of OCs they made over the years, not to mention absorbing the old OCs from that early 90's cartoon. It's pretty comical how many fucking echidnas they made over the years:

But it seems Whisper (and another character named Tangle) proved so popular that not only did they get their own miniseries with IDW before any of the regulars (like Shadow, Tails, or Knuckles), in July this year, they added Whisper there to two sonic games. Sonic Dash and Sonic Forces: Speed Battle.

https://twitter.com/SEGAHARDlight/status/1284156383223586818

So why share this little story? To be honest, while a fan of the Sonic games and once an avid Sonic comic reader, it actually seems really cool to me that people in the fanbase who seem to have a much bigger love and devotion to this series than I do to the point where they do create characters like this, after decades of largely viewed the "bad" side of the Sonic fandom, finally get some level of validation of their fanhood by having SEGA actively acknowledge it in basically one of the best ways possible. I think it's a great example of a more tolerant society towards a group of actively maligned people (in this case furries) to help reduce some level of prejudice against them. A furry who started out drawing on Tumblr helps create a character so popular that fucking SEGA puts it in their games.

Also I wish Ed Bellis was here because he was a huge Sonic comic fan, too, and I'd love to hear what he thinks.

IIRC This one weirdo inserted his own OCs into the story then when he left (or got fired) he continued writing them

and it was legal because apparently he didn't sign any documents saying they were Sega propery or they got lost or something

so yea, OCs in official stuff happen if the writers are ascended fans

You're talking the Ken Penders situation, where it shows you how little SEGA and Sonic Team gave a shit about the comic when they couldn't produce the basic paper work that let keep the characters he came up with under his tenure as lead writer.

But like shoving OCs into the comic isn't anything new. It's been done for almost 30 years this point. Good Lord especially echidnas under Ken Penders. That was just the ones that were related to Knuckles. And during that time period, it wasn't exactly people who had grown up making Sonic OCs writing and drawing for the comic. That wouldn't come until Ken was finally gotten rid of for Ian Flynn in the mid 2000's.

But even then, none of the comic characters ever got a hint of being in the games. Not even super popular ones like Sally from the original Saturday morning cartoon that lived on in the comics.

So yeah to me this seems like a huge win for that community.

Actually the whole reason Ken Penders filed that lawsuit to assert control over the characters he created was because this DID happen once before, technically--the Nocturnus Clan in Sonic Chronicles for DS were basically Penders' Dark Legion, just with a different name

Which normally I would root for a creative type asserting their right to what they created but Ken Penders has proven to be a mad-lad who A) put a character in his recent comic that is clearly the traced head of Anthony Mackie and B) had a prolonged discussion on Twitter about how he wish he could have depicted Knuckles and his OC Julie-Su having sex in the the comic.

I mean I don't think they had sex, I think they just made out. He also made out with Rouge and an OC named Fiona Fox.

But yeah, he invented an evil zone Sonic that was literally just Sonic wearing a biker jacket and sunglasses.

Of course the new writer and artists gave him a nice little redesign and personality so of course when someone actually fixed Penders stupid idea he had to take it away.

The Ken Penders rabbit hole is fascinating. It's a horrifying nightmare, yet I keep finding myself drawn to the grim spectacle of it all.

I'm glad Sega never tried to put the Freedom Fighters and other alternate continuity characters in the games, though. I'm a huge fan of SatAM and Sally in particular, but Sonic Team doesn't exactly have the best track record of storytelling (Colors onward is particularly unbearable), and there's absolutely zero chance that those characters could be done justice.

He at one point during the lawsuit wanted the rights to Knuckles. Yes, a character actually created and completely owned by SEGA.

Honestly I don't want to turn this into a Ken Penders topic despite how horrifically fascinating he is to Sonic fandom. I just like seeing a cute little OC design making it to the big time in the company. In general the IDW reboot I've seen has some really neat new character designs, but sadly I haven't read a Sonic comic since they had to do that God awful Genesis-wave reboot.

There's apparently some heavy implication that her and Tangle are a couple, even though they refer to each other as friends in the comic.

Apparently her reaction to a supposed temporary heroic sacrifice by Tangle was, well, this:

Which my first thought was "Jesus Christ, this is a Sonic comic?" Then I remembered all my years reading them going "Oh yup, this is absolutely a Sonic comic."

I might do a read-thru topic on it. The Genesis Wave reboot just fucking killed any interest I had in the comic, especially after Ian had spent so much time rehabbing so many bad characters into something you'd be interested in, only to have them all ripped away. Maybe a completely clean break, though, might be interesting.

But also, look closer at that dialogue. The lines about a nap? Are in a different font. They arent hand lettered. This is a telltale sign that the text was altered late in production. I shudder to think what it originally said. And the icing on the cake? Penders considers this not a story about Bunnie being victimized, but rather a story about her betraying Antoines trust by sleeping with another guy.

He filed a legal copyright for the characters and stories and then Archie filed a cease and desist. After doing so, he challenged that he owned the rights to the characters and they didn't present Penders contract claiming he gives up all ownership of the characters he created to them. It is standard in contracts, but because they couldn't present a contract and knew it would end up being a messy legal battle, they settled and said that this guy can have his shitty characters and comics.

So Ken Penders is now the proud owner of a dead bee that overdosed on LSD chili.

Nah, it's the opposite. They're agreeing to publish your creation. Like if you write an autobiography, you don't lose rights to your own story if someone publishes it for you.

That's why Archie/SEGA would have them sign this paperwork in the first place.
