Books can teach that stuff, but kids can learn it from tv before they even know how to read. Driving automatic is the norm so it makes sense for everyone to learn that. Manual is pretty much outdated. The only reason to learn it is if you really love cars. Most people won't ever need to do it. It makes much more sense to teach them to drive automatic and then ask if they're also interested in learning manual.
I don't love cars and know how to drive manual. If you learn manual then you can drive auto. There is no downside there. And we should just agree to disagree that tv > books/games/crafts when it comes to early childhood development.
