  2. Teaching then how to get around via walking, bicycle, skateboard, public transit, etc before getting a car. Manual transmission when the day finally comes
  3. No candy or soda or processed food

Also, we live in a world where they will feel entitled to that stuff through literally everyone else having access to it and that will make them want to spite you. They won't understand it in any way other than you not wanting them to have something everyone else has. If you think "I'll just explain it to them" then..... good luck?

There was supposed to be an etc in there. Point is to not rely on cars for everything

Children do not have access to any of these things by themselves. Wouldn't it be more controlling if I gave them this stuff

Kind of pointless since manuals are basically extinct.

I believe agree that many programs have benefits, but also believe children's television focuses on entertainment first, with education as a selling point to parents.

Also about manual transmission if you know how to drive one you absolutely should pass that knowledge along. If you can drive a manual transmission car, you can drive an automatic car. This doesn't work in reverse.

I don't know why so many in this topic seemingly want the knowledge to die out. This can only be beneficial.

I don't believe they are necessary for development and may actually be detrimental.

Instead of television we have arts and crafts, sports, games (not video).

Alternate forms of transport are more convenient until they can afford a vehicle. Honestly surprised more people don't believe a child having a car is excessive

No candy, but can eat sweet fruit.

TV shows teach little kids stuff like colors and counting. You can have them do arts and crafts and just limit the amount of time that they watch tv. Banning it altogether will just make it harder for them to connect with other kids. I didn't have a problem with number 2 except I think its cringey and weird to force them to get a car with a manual transmission. If they don't care about cars then its much more convenient for them to use an automatic. And once again you could just limit the amount of sweets and junk food that they eat. What's the problem with having it sometimes? Even if you forbid them from eating it, they'll just get it from their friends or buy it for themselves eventually

Damn near. Tv is too easy to assist with parenting which is part of the reason why I refuse. I know all too well how hypnotizing it is to sit kids in front of a screen while I do other things.

Books and pictures can teach colors and counting. I'm not worried about connecting to other kids based on television they watch. And again I don't understand how it's cringe to teach people how to drive stick shift. You say I'm forcing them? Wouldn't it also be forcing them to learn how to drive auto?

I already know their aunts and uncle slip them candy, and their grandma buys McDonald's.

Books can teach that stuff, but kids can learn it from tv before they even know how to read. Driving automatic is the norm so it makes sense for everyone to learn that. Manual is pretty much outdated. The only reason to learn it is if you really love cars. Most people won't ever need to do it. It makes much more sense to teach them to drive automatic and then ask if they're also interested in learning manual.

I don't love cars and know how to drive manual. If you learn manual then you can drive auto. There is no downside there. And we should just agree to disagree that tv > books/games/crafts when it comes to early childhood development.
