I used to hate to this series for just being an excuse to show gratuitous deaths without much substance but it was scenes like this that made me appreciate it for just how stupid it could be. The leaps & bounds of logic & coincidence to make this scene work are insane, but if you turn your brain off, this is one of the most gleeful scenes of pure carnage to ever grace the silver screen. It's like everyone forgets they have brakes in their vehicles and can just you know... stop at anytime? Cars will just randomly explode on impact where nothing logically would even make that occur. This is the premonition scene for this film too; at least in the first film, it's a little more simplified & realistic, but I guess you either go big or you go home for the sequel. On the technical side, this scene is incredibly shot & puts most action films to shame. Forget brakes, the sense of speed & flow here is almost bar none, frames linger on tumbling vehicles, cutting at opportune times to show the terror of the people on the inside, and then ending off quite morbidly in the burning aftermath. FD2 was directed by David R. Ellis, an experienced second unit director on a slew of action films, which I guess gave this scene the boost it needed to stand out as much as it does and to be distracted by the demolition while you forget the logistics of it all.
