Umineko When They Cry is a visual novel, and a huge one at that. Loosely based on Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None, Umineko deals with a series of murders on a secluded island, and though the game features no direct interaction besides clicking the next dialogue option, the player is encouraged to keep notes and play detective as they solve the mystery along the way. The mystery includes some supernatural elements and the player must discern between the real and paranormal. I better get it out of the way now: I couldn't get into this and didn't get very far. The characters and writing here just bored me to tears, I wasn't very compelled to keep going and there is little incentive in keeping your own notes in my opinion. It was disappointing since I greatly enjoyed Higurashi, but the level of violence and more prevalent horror elements in that made that more of an easy sell for me. Now, I didn't have time to try the anime before the project, so there's still a chance I could enjoy this franchise in a different light. Sorry if that's a little disappointing to hear, but well, I guess it happens sometimes.
