I feel like Pumpkinhead is a horror film becoming lost to time. It's a total cult hit by every definition; if you don't have a high tolerance for slashers, vengeful demons, horrible teenagers, or witchcraft you will not have a good time here. Pumpkinhead was directed by Stan Winston, an absolutely LEGENDARY special effects artist who, if you don't know his name, you've definitely seen his work in films like Terminator, Jurassic Park, or Predator to name a few. As you would thus expect, the titular monster looks plain incredible. He's like the best parts of Alien & Predator fused into one, but with a corpse-like visage emanating throughout his lanky, gremlin-like body. You can sense the smell of death surrounding him with just one glance. In the film, Pumpkinhead is brought to life when Ed Harley, a widowed father who goes on to lose his son because of some teenagers goofing around on dirt bikes, heads off to see a witch about bringing his son back. In a twist, Ed sees Pumpkinhead's murders of the teenagers through the demon's eyes, and experiences first hand the all-too-painful downsides of revenge. It's a simple story at heart, but it's elevated due to Lance Henriksen's performance as Ed, a remorseful, sorrowful man who goes through more trauma than one can imagine, and Winston's confidently dark direction, always treating the material and his beloved monster with the respect they deserve as well as casting scenes and locations in a gloomy, Gothic tone that's subtle but sticks with you almost as a character in itself. Still, it does have the trappings of a typical slasher film, the aforementioned teenagers a glaring one as they are as generic and unlikable as they come, muddying the message a little bit, but with Pumpkinhead's amazing design and bold characterization of its main character, Pumpkinhead is a film that should be summoned back to the forefront once more.
