Is this my new favorite anime? I think it's my new favorite anime. Now I know what those bunnies were all about back in volume 2. Blood-C is an ingeniously-paced creatively liberal nod to Lovecraft, placed next to slice-of-life sunny school days (well, at first). Main protagonist Saya, is a klutzy, happy-go-lucky girl by day, a badass, totally stoic demon slayer by night, an absolute beast with a sword. This shift is absolute jarring, and I think it makes the tone of the show much more powerful than if it was just about killing monsters. It's really just a typical superhero story on the surface, with a civilian and caped identity, and though she isn't exactly bullied or anything at school, she is ridiculed for being late often or for being too excitable and constantly tripping over her own two fight, a far cry from her strict and important duties as a protector of her village. During the first few episodes, there's a rhythm: Saya's chores as a shrine maiden, stop at the coffee shop, singing to herself, being late for school, then coming home at night for battle, aided with advice from her doting father. The battle scenes are choreographed like samurai fights, and are kinetic and bloody as the anime's title implies. If I had one complaint, the monster designs, while creative in concept, are lacking in their animation, losing a lot of fine detail that would make them more memorable for me, but the fights still make up for that. As you get into this rhythm however, Blood-C starts to trickle in details that maybe everything isn't as cut and dry as it seems, as Saya gets headaches of increasing severity and her encounters with the monsters (called Elder Bairns by the way) become stranger as they start speaking of a covenant between humans and the Bairns and encroach on the typical safe daylight of the series. It's eventually revealed that the entire town, people, school mates, teachers, even her father, everything is part of an experiment that attempts to suppress Saya's true desires as an Elder Baird herself. This is totally Lovecraftian, to have an entire village in on its darker underbelly. This twist is nothing short of incredible and elevated the show extremely for me. Blood-C is a short anime, with 20-minute episodes and is well worth a watch for fans of Lovecraft, twists, slice-of-life moments, and kick-ass battle scenes. Saya is a great protagonist too, adorable but badass, and the twist just makes her so much better too. Give it a shot!
