Anagram 10/15/20 3:10:15 PM #191: | Yuuzhan Vong Unlike most EU stuff, I'd already read about the Yuuzhan Vong before this topic. Here's what I like about them: they're an attempt at a big villain that is about neither magical mystical stuff (the Sith) nor stark physical equipment (the Empire). Instead, their shtick is that they use organic technology, which is kind of a tired trope, but I'll allow it because organic technology has never really been done that well in fiction. What you have instead is things like the Zerg, which are great, but not quite the same thing. The Yuuzhan Vong also have an actual culture, one that's much more fleshed out than you normally get in Star Wars, which I appreciate. Caste systems in alien cultures is a little played out, but it's fiiiiine. I wonder what Indian people think of their culture being used by white people in sci-fi as shorthand for scary aliens? I guess I can sum this up as the Yuuzhan Vong being assembled from other sci-fi tropes, but done reasonably well, to the point where I can accept them as something cool in the universe. Chewbacca's Bowcaster I'm gonna level with you. I watched the OT a million times as a kid, and I had zero memory of Chewbacca's laser crossbow. It wasn't until I played the video games and these things showed up that I looked it up and found out that this had been here all along. This is something that just left zero impression on me at all. I appreciate the idea that sasquatches wouldn't use normal guns, but instead they build laser crossbows? Get out of here. Chewbacca's weapon should have just been his fists, and maybe throwing objects he finds. Cloud City A thinly-sketched out location for half of ESB to take place on. I love ESB as much as anyone, but Cloud City itself is just a series of nice-looking corridors. "Floating city" might be the most overused sci-fi/fantasy trope. It's cool and fantastic like three times, and then you're done with it. Star Wars Fandom Honestly, I mostly avoid the SW fandom. I'm much more familiar with the Trek fandom, for obvious reasons, but the SW fandom has always struck me as... I don't know, slightly more annoying? I can't put this into words, sorry. What I will say in the SW fandom's defense is that no other fandom was ever, like, betrayed as much as they were? First by George Lucas making atrocious movies, and then by Disney throwing out the EU, which I assume the SW fandom loved, since it did have five-billion books. Darth Maul AKA the only memorable thing in all of PM, and he has two lines. I'm genuinely curious if Darth Maul is actually cool, or if he's merely the coolest thing in his movie, and no one would otherwise remember him. I do think he has a great design, though. Maul really should have been the main villain of PM. Establish that he's working for someone high up in the Senate, but we don't know who (even though the audience knows it has to be Ian McDiarmid because he played Palpatine in the 80s), and he does all of the villainous stuff instead of Nute Gunray. There's nothing to this character as a person, though. He wants nonspecific revenge for nonspecific reasons, I guess? The most comical moment in maybe all of Star Wars is when Daenerys Targaryen is talking to the mysterious mobster over the blue-and-white hologram phone. Suddenly it's revealed that it's Darth Maul, but because Disney was afraid that audiences wouldn't remember him, he then activates his lightsaber over the phone for literally no reason, and it's red even though the holograms in Star Wars are always blue. Clone Wars (Film) I was hoping this wouldn't be nominated. I saw this movie in theaters with my dad in 2008. Look, I'm not... I don't know, I don't get offended easily, I guess? But Ziro the Hutt is maybe the most offensive character in Star Wars. What possessed George Lucas to add a drag queen villain, I can't say. He's not quite as bad as Profit and Lace, the Deep Space 9 episode where Quark turns into a woman to sleep with a businessman in order to prove that girls are as smart as boys, but he's still really bad. This is also the movie where Obi-Wan betrays a parlay with his enemy, which seems wildly out of character to me. Honestly, I have no idea how this got a theatrical release. Whenever someone is like "George Lucas' movies weren't that bad," he should be forced to rewatch this movie. Keyblades Keyblades are a bit contentious for me. I acknowledge that keys do look kind of like swords, and combining them was a clever idea, and equipping keychains that change the design of the blade is very cool. As a singular design, keyblades are great. And yeah, giving them the power to unlock things makes sense thematically. But being cool is all keyblades needed to be. They did not need a giant epic stupid backstory about Keyblade Knights or whatever they were called (I'm too lazy to even google it). But the strength of the concept and basic design is enough for me to give them a decent rank. ----------- Thunderous Applause Star Trek The Force Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope Lightsabers Darth Vader Death Star Sheev Palpatine You're My Only Hope Yoda John Williams The Saga Begins (Song) Han Solo Millennium Falcon Grand Admiral Thrawn Luke Skywalker R2-D2 Luke vs Vader Duel (Bespin) Mr. Plinkett Star Wars Reviews Hand of Thrawn Trilogy Mos Eisley Cantina TIE Fighter A New Hope Poster Baby Yoda It's a Trap Star Wars Ep 1: Jedi Party Duel of the Fates Order 66 The Force is Strong with This One Battle of Hoth Obi-Wan Kenobi Twi'leks Force Lightning Grand Moff Tarkin j*** Music Jabba's Palace Sequence Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi C-3PO Star Wars Toys Headbonk Stormtrooper Spaceballs Rise of the Resistance Yuzzhan Vong Anagram Ranks Anything Star Wars-related Death Star II Assault Lego Star Wars Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith Qui-Gon Jinn Jawas Shadows of the Empire (N64) Keyblades Jyn Erso Kyle Katarn Darth Maul Hand Amputations Salacious B.
