Pretty sure that's just an Old Wives' Tale. You'll get what you would have gotten if you had pulled 10 times in sequence. The only bit of credence to it is if you're pulling on a banner just to hit pity and then move on, like if you're pulling the weapon banner. Singles might get you the 5-star early in the sequence and then prevent you from burning 7 or 8 wishes toward a new pity timer you'll never make use of.

If you're only pulling for the guarantee'd 4*, do singles because you might get it in 5 pulls rather than 10. If you're pulling more than that you might as well do the 10 pull to save clicks(Arknights is another Gacha where this is the case)

In several other Gachas(for example Magia Record), doing 10 single pulls didn't guarantee anything, but you were guaranteed a magical girl if you did a full 10 pull.
