Not only is the instrumentation tight as hell, with an amazingly catchy central guitar riff and a bass line that just keeps getting better the more you hear it, Joe Strummer delivers one of his best vocal performances of the entire Clash's career. Lyrically, the song is dense with imagery of burnt out rockstars and the unavoidable hypocrisy that comes with growing old and becoming who you swore to hate as a reckless youth. "Death or glory" is this anti-anthemic phrase indulging in the theory that ultimately nothing matters anyway as we'll all end in the grave one way or another. Raise hell, sell out, play in the same dingy club until your 80, hey, in the end it's all just another story, and it's hard to think of another song as true to life as this one is.
