With the start of the new year, I always feel extra motivated to do projects and challenges just to see how much I can push myself and learn to grow. One of many things I thought would be fun is post and recommend a new song every day, whether it's an old worn favorite or something I just heard a minute ago. I'll discuss the track with a short blurb, nothing too crazy, well, depending on my mood maybe! Whether this lasts a day, three months, or by miracle, the whole year, I hope this helps at least one person find a new song they'll love, and hey, feel free to join on your own recs too. Literally any type of song will go, so expect a healthy grab bag of stuff.

Without further ado, the first track:

January 1, 2021 - Rhonda Vincent - I Gotta Start Somewhere
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbMyv_FMKkA

Appropriate title. A soothing light bluegrass/country sound, I adore Rhonda's inflections and the lyrics just transport me to a world of total bliss and intense relaxation. It's the type of song I would take with me on a solo hike or crisp, cool walk. The variation on the chorus lyrics are great touches and really emphasize that feeling of trying many things and still not really finding yourself in the end. It's in the middle ground between hopeful and melancholy, and hell if that isn't the best place to get your new year transition rolling off just right.

Nice idea!

I nominate Goodbye Angels by Red Hot Chili Peppers.

One of my favourites from the post John Frusciante era. If only for Flea's bass solo!

EDIT: Sorry misread the opening post and you're not asking for recommendations :).

Will still be following!

Thanks yeah I definitely won't rule out featuring someone's rec but these will mainly be from my giant pool of songs. I don't want anyone to be discouraged from posting their own though.

Eve 6 - Jet Plane
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsmYNPN0gC8

An obscure cover released only on the Japanese version of Eve 6's sophomore album Horrorscope, I absolutely adore this version's manic energy that adds a dash of pop punk in-your-faceness to the typically introspective song about being torn between touring and being at home with family. In a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor, there's a slight lyric change where Max sings "Third verses are such a bitch/one of these days I will learn it" with the song then cutting out the original's third verse. It fits right in with the rest of the album's overall irreverent tone. I just love fun, unexpected covers and Eve 6's Jet Plane feels like an impromptu jam sesh where just having a good time is the main goal!

The Clash - Death or Glory
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Td6I5l9UnSg

My favorite Clash song and one of my absolute favorite songs in general. Not only is the instrumentation tight as hell, with an amazingly catchy central guitar riff and a bass line that just keeps getting better the more you hear it, Joe Strummer delivers one of his best vocal performances of the entire Clash's career. Lyrically, the song is dense with imagery of burnt out rockstars and the unavoidable hypocrisy that comes with growing old and becoming who you swore to hate as a reckless youth. "Death or glory" is this anti-anthemic phrase indulging in the theory that ultimately nothing matters anyway as we'll all end in the grave one way or another. Raise hell, sell out, play in the same dingy club until your 80, hey, in the end it's all just another story, and it's hard to think of another song as true to life as this one is. Simply superb and I will constantly spin this track until I just become another story myself.

Children of Bodom - In Your Face
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SgN5lvWZwQ

In case you haven't heard, we tragically lost Alexi Laiho, lead vocalist and guitarist of Children of Bodom today. So, I thought I'd feature one of their more well known songs; overall, I think CoB is a great gateway into more extreme forms of metal, as I always found CoB's vocals more approachable than most death metal acts. There's a great in your face intensity that you really want from a song like this. Laiho was a great talent and he will be sorely missed.

Eiichi Ohtaki - Kimiwa Tennenshoku
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dH9yLGoIxBw

I grabbed this one from the recent Tim Rogers Tokimeki Memorial review, an absolute no-brainer for me after growing ever more obsessed with Japanese pop and rock music from this era (in large part due to the Plastic Love craze). There's just something so effortlessly chill about the instrumentation here, I just feel like it carries me on this soft cloud through the sky while still being a pretty rollicking good time. Plus, the album art is amazing like most of these album covers.

Refused - Worms of the Senses/Faculties of the Skull
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1eC8de9QG0

The opening track to the incredible influential "Shape of Punk to Come", this dual-hitting track combines rebellious violent hardcore punk lyrics with an instrumentally progressive sound, with spidery riffs that are pure candy for the ear, incredible jazz-influenced drumming, and capping it all off with some electronic/techno sounds near the end. With references to poetry and iconoclasm, Refused open the track with a goosebumps-inducing spoken word piece befoe launching into tirades against the capitalistic machine and using humans as mere cogs in said machine. The vocal delivery is as angry as it is anguished and passionate, you can feel the emotion lift up together with the instruments in a way that just feels cathartic. I guarantee you haven't heard any punk quite like this track.

Boston Manor - Everything Is Ordinary
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRlT-qFlBSk

2020 was a year with a nice dash of experimentation for a lot of genres, and Boston Manor's Everything Is Ordinary falls nicely into this category, with one of the freshest takes on pop punk in what feels like a long time. It appeals to modern audiences with an electronic soundscape as its base but with melded with some genuinely hard-hitting riffs and a driving drum pattern. Insanely catchy chorus too, BM knows their way around hooks. I do think Henry Cox's processed vocals can run the risk of getting annoying on too many repeat listens, but, to break this out every now and again is the perfect cure for too many samey pop punk songs.

Taylor Swift - Cruel Summer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ic8j13piAhQ

Though Lover may have been a hit or miss album for me, there was at least one song that was a crystal clear revelation for me: Cruel Summer. It had practically encapsulated everything that had made me a T-Swift fan up until that point, and felt like a culmination of everything she had tried to do with her song-writing. The dreamy wistful nostalgia of Taylor's best 1989 deep cuts, an industrial-synth production that references Reputation, the incising love affairs of Taylor's country roots, and just that slight dash of rock edge that helped mold and inform both Speak Now and Red. Taylor, a typical queen of bridges in general, does her best work ever here, ranting out ultra-emotional lines like the dramatic climax of a Shakespearean play, each ramping up in intensity until "he looks up grinning like a devil" comes out of her mouth like she's about to guest vocal for the next Slipknot song. Yes, it's a song influenced by all her work but it's also a unique voice in a unique moment all to its own, an undeniable triumph of catchy song-writing, in which Taylor does what she does best, lead you on an emotional roller-coaster where you're far from the same person you were when you started the track.

Idina Menzel & Kristin Chenoweth - What is This Feeling? (from Wicked)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dk3H2yvsH-U

It's hard to pick a favorite from the overall incredible Wicked musical, but if I had to, What Is this Feeling? would be a strong contender. With awesome cast chemistry, impassioned performances from our two leads, and genius song-writing, What Is This Feeling? offers up a pure slice of musical bliss, initially framing the song as letters to Glinda's and Elphaba's parents before opening up to be this intense chess match of push-and-pull vocals until a whole choir joins in on the fray. I love how you can read both of our lead's personalities in such simple but shining examples, like how each starts off their letters (e.g. one lovingly/one business-like) or Glinda' wordiness compared to Elphie's staunch one-word snarkiness (e.g. BLONDE). Another interesting layer is how this is written as a love song, where the two parties appear to hate each but deep down secretly wish to get there, adding some lesbian-friendly context to the conversation. It's fun, it's extra in the best way, and it begs repeat listens to understand every nuance it tries to go for.

Kids See Ghosts ft. Louis Prima - 4th Dimension
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Hj5tucYv1Q

A short but sweet fire-cracker of a hip-hop track, Kanye and Kid Cudi trade off verses, one chock full of not-so-subtle innuendo and the other a wordy meditation on personal inner demons. This is all over an eerie psychedelic beat worthy of Halloween and a genius Louis Prima sample (well, feature!) that invokes Christmas in what may be one of the most creepy ways possible, as "What Will Santa Claus Say" becomes this slowed-down and reversed skin-crawl of an interlude, like a warning before the shitstorm. It's a clever experimental track and it's easy to get lost in its surprising amount of nuance.

Saori Maeda, Masami Ueda - The Hospital (from Resident Evil 3: Nemesis)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vy_iknQ2UlI

Was feeling a bit dark and gloomy today, and I thought of this track, from the overall phenomenal OST of the conclusion to the PS1 RE trilogy. Let's face it; abandoned hospitals are one of those creepy places we're all each a little apprehensive of. Hell, even populated a hospital can be a harrowing experience for many, despite being a place of healing. RE3's The Hospital manages to capture both of these moods, an eerie piece of pure atmosphere that snapshots a hospital's cold, clinical nature through intense, haunting & echoing strings representing the barren hallways punctuated by thumping string crashes and the pitter-patter of water-like droplets in a stylistic fusion of natural sound and traditional instrumentation. It makes you feel like despite everything, you're not alone here and makes you feel the presence of the Nemesis even when you think he's not pursuing you. It's a simple but effective track and just the kind of thing I love to better immerse myself in an over-cast day.

Miranda Lambert - Priscilla
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5R2qMLeKFwg

Miranda Lambert is easily my favorite woman in country right now. I was already a big fan before Wildcard, but that album just absolutely blew my socks off and is one of my favorites of the decade. Priscilla isn't from that album, however, it's still a fantastic, up-beat somewhat deep cut from her 2014 effort Platinum. With its more 60s-style rock and roll beat and catchy rapid-fire lyrics, Miranda details the life and times of Priscilla Presley, Elvis's infamous spouse, and more accurately their rocky and strained relationship. With this framework, Miranda also examines her own life at the time married to Blake Shelton and how similar their two relationships ultimately were. You can just tell in the delivery Miranda feels and means every word she's saying with some passionate vitriol, but at the same time she also takes some pride in being "queen to the king" and there's a real attempt to genuinely try and make things work even in the face of perseverance. Like a lot of what I love about Miranda's work, it's fun and sardonic as hell while being nothing but truthful in its message, and that right there is a way to make a solid song that lasts in my book.
