I was on the Fire Emblem boards back then. My record of moderations was actually quite clean. Rarely go moderated, same as today. I participated in a meme of the game on that games message board and a mod went through and banned everyone who participated. Pretty much a purge. He announced it too on the forum and pinned his topic as well. No way something like that would happen now. Im fact, I heard recently that mods cant ban people. I dont know if that has always been a thing or a change over the years. Maybe a mod can clarify.
