Feel free to chalk it up to us being big, dumb, stupid apes but propagating the bloodline and passing on our genes is important to us as a species. Options exist, such as adoption or a surrogate or something, but not everyone is going to be comfortable watching their SO have sex with someone else to have a child or will treat an adopted child like they're their own.
