That wasn't even really the whole point of the old movie. There's a fair bit of subtext there that most people completely miss because they hyper-focus on the ending alone.

It was. For a series of movies based on a franchise that had petered out decades earlier, starting with a film that feels like a remake/reboot prequel, it kind of feels like the whole thing should be incredibly cheesy, lame, and pointless. But it actually works pretty well.

Andy Serkis might be like 70% of the reason the movies work, though. He's like a crazy mo-cap genius.
