That's exactly how it works in d2. You have to beat lower difficulty to go to higher and you keep your stats and equipment.

Another way to increase difficulty is to set number of players higher.


Nog there are 3 difficulties you play through, each is harder with bigger penalties (non in normal), but also higher monster levels and therefore drops.

If your not playing with other people, there at least used to be a program called pluggy that would let you set the # of players to a higher number (which ups the monster difficulty, item drop rate and exp) along with other things that you normally had to be online for. I still think I have it on my computer.

I'm not sure if it's active at all online at this point, but I don't think I played online last time I played it (a few years ago).
