It's about seeming virtuous over being honest and respecting the freedom of the people. Alternatively, it's about appealing to people that want unrestricted freedom at any cost and ignoring all available science and data in the process. The whole "the government is just doing what they think looks best and not actually acting according to the situation" thing goes both ways, after all. --- This is my signature.
