He is a special ed kid. The parents had nothing to do with his problem, neither did violent video games. He has a mental illness that causes him to lash out. He needs help, not prison or lawsuits.

It doesn't matter if the parents aren't at fault, they're still liable for compensation. The teacher doesn't have to pay.

I would first try to retreat and avoid confrontation. If that's impossible, then I would use force. It really depends on the environment and the circumstances of the attack. If I'm the only one in danger, retreating might be my best option. If other people might be in danger, especially kids, then I would definitely use force. Considering the kid isn't tall enough to hit me on the head, I wouldn't mind taking a blow while I forcefully attempt to grab their arm and disarm them. Once the weapon is out of reach, I would only need to grapple the kid and force them to calm down before I let them go.
