I feel like that is too obvious just because they do that sort of thing with Barry himself a lot already. I feel that's more "his" running gag. Especially since Gene is established as being rather disliked and known for bursts of anger in the industry already. I guess I foresee Gene going down an even darker road but I'm not really sure where yet!
I can appreciate a good set-up episode, even if I feel like it's the closest to filler Barry has ever gotten. I did like the theme of acting obscuring character's true feelings here, almost everyone in the main cast is lying in someway and hiding things from others and it was just demonstrated really well across the board.
