Ideally, but we've seen basically exactly that with Canada's conservative party: O'Toole made some efforts to be more moderate and win over some of the Liberal voters (noting that the Liberal party here is a left-leaning moderate party, with the NDP being the more solidly left-wing one, but it's not like the US Democrats are exactly far-left), but that ended up not working because the Liberal voters weren't particularly interested in voting Conservative and the more extreme right-wingers jumped ship for the PPC. O'Toole has since been ousted as party leader and his replacement is leaning much harder into the flimsy populist rhetoric that modern conservatives seem to want.
