i'm doing all the Hildibrand quests and lmao i can't get enough.

i mean, it's not that it's a bad game. it's that they took away a lot of shit i liked about it. even trivial minor things that were largely superficial. did you know back in 1.0 there was an instanced market ward, and your retainer would stand in the market and ppl could browse it like a shop? fuckin loved going bargain hunting. in addition to retainers, you also had your own customizable companion that accompanied you on story quests and stuff. they spoke in cutscenes and had different personalities and shit too.

in 1.0, and early ARR, you could take abilities/spells you learned from other jobs and use them on your main. i remember soloing shit like cutter's cry while leveling on my PLD because i'm good at kiting and i cross classed cure spells.
and i fuckin love shit like that. i'll never forget going to the boyahda tree in FFXI for the first time and seeing a red mage soloing a NM (world boss kinda, rare loot) that usually took a full party to kill, by using gravity spells to kite and ninja cross-classed ninjutsu for evasion.
XIV used to have NMs/world bosses like that, but now they're just FATEs which are infinitely fucking lamer.

fuck in 1.0, you could level exclusively as a crafter/gatherer and still do the story, and while i never did it myself, so i can't speak to how well they pulled it off, the design philosophy was that you would be able to play the game entirely as a non-combat class.

were these systems perfect in ffxiv? not at all. they could have been vastly improved upon. but rather than refine and polish a lot of these systems, they just gutted them in favor of streamlining.

what i wanted was FFXI-2. what I got was final fantasy flavored world of warcraft.
