I've always biggest reason Age of Ultron's humor feels so flat is there isn't anyone in the movie taking anything seriously. Usually the villain is the one achieving that in Marvel movies but Ultron is trying to outjoke Iron Man and it sucks

You need a straight man SOMEWHERE.

I just really hate that Ultron is joking throughout the movie. That whole Klaue scene is just painful on a re-watch seeing him do Tony Stark schtick and then throwing a tantrum when Klaue says that Ultron is with Tony.

And then even Ultron getting beaten when he's hit with a wicked uppercut from Hulk at the end he's like "Aww, now guys, I don't suppose there's any chance--" And then he's trying to fly away in the Quinjet and says "Aw, come on man!" when he's thrown out. Just... what are we doing here? Why did Ultron of all people need to be cracking jokes? His best scenes are when he comes across as a soulless maniacal metal monster.

What's funny is that they actually do him a hell of a lot better in What If? He's actually vicious, feared, and everything.
