To be fair, its perfectly justifiable to not want to copy the source material for the show tbh. People get too caught up in that especially when it comes to nerd culture.

There is a certain degree to which this is true and a threshold at which it no longer is, and pretty much every big adaption that's been tried lately has crossed over the threshold. Fans of things are generally fans because they, assumably, like the way stuff was. It's one thing when you do stuff like make the cast multiracial, or switch up the timeline or deviate into original stuff here and there, but this current trend to go "I am unbound by the thing I am adapting and we are going to change everything to try to surprise people" is real lame, and furthermore, doesn't seem to work very well in terms of getting good publicity.

I've seen them called "trojan horse adaptions" recently and that's a pretty good descriptor for them. They use the facade of a popular piece of media to get funding and a baseline of an audience, and then once stuff gets going the trapdoor opens and you start getting washed over by original stories writers wanted to tell regardless of setting but couldn't get the funding to get onscreen without the recognizable face.
