I don't think the characters in this are more or less garish than what you got in Awakening or Fates tbh. If those games were in pretty HD graphics I think we'd see similar complaints.

I mean I had my complaints about the Awakening designs too, especially Awakening's armored designs. Fates were generally an improvement outside of the sheer amount of battle panties.

Three Houses had design philosophies closer to the pre-Awakening games, factor in the excellent designs from Echos and it felt like the series was normalizing itself.

So Engage's designs are a really stark contrast. They are operating under a completely different design philosophy more in-line with high-fantasy anime than anything the series had messed with before. The Kingdom of Brodia seems to be the exception here where most of the designs are more like classic Fire Emblem designs. I mean Citrine is basically Nanna.
