It's why I tend to view LucasArts as the #1 point-and-click adventure game studio from that era. They focused a bit more on having fun and telling interesting stories than on punishing players and making things excessively hard to encourage people to call the Sierra hint-line for clues.

Pretty much this. Old Sierra games were usually pretty obtuse and the ability to get stuck in a no win scenario hours into a game if you miss something early on is just awful design.
