Either this game is more difficult than the usual for a JRPG or I'm failing to get something.

I think FC has a great deal of difficulty, especially early on, just because you pretty much don't have any cushion. Your spell pool is extremely limited, your crafts are few, you don't have much money and what you do have needs to be spent wisely, and the enemies are really strong against what you have available.

I think the difficulty eases up as you get more options to play with. As I was typing all that out, I think a great analogy would be Pokemon RB. Remember when you first played Pokemon and how you're stuck with Tackle/Scratch and Growl/Tail Whip for a while, and a lot of your money is being spent on Potions and Antidotes because you keep running out (especially in Red since Weedle are far more prevalent)? And then you hit Brock, and if you started with Charmander, you're in for a world of hurt? But once you get to make a more varied team, the game is still difficult but you can reassess and reorganize your party and try out different things to tackle problems? That's FC with spell set-ups and accessorizing and new enemy types, etc.

FC is brutal at first. I hate hate hate those plants on the Mainz Path. I love just smashing all those enemies in NG+ with ease. Very cathartic.
