Unless there's credible evidence that somebody deliberately deceived the record-keepers in a way that they couldn't reasonably be expected to see through, taking "I didn't know my employee committed fraud for my benefit" at face value is quite hopelessly gullible. It quite often works in court, as corporations often deliberately engineer plausible deniability into any wrongdoing so they can throw a bottom-rung employee under the bus and claim not to have known anything about it, but absolutely everybody (except you, apparently) knows that's bullshit and that they're only able to get away with it because they hid the evidence well enough.
