It stopped them from going through with their original plan to kill off one of the main characters at the end of season 1. As a result, they were able to kill off that person in the epic stretch of episodes that marked the series finale of the show.You may have the wrong person based on your description. Also, the writer's strike really isn't what caused that in particular.
