I did know that a vulnerability was recently discovered in many Wii U/3DS games that allowed hackers to get into your system just be being connected to the internet while playing those games, even if you aren't playing online, but I thought they had all been fixed.

I think it is. They already patched all the Switch and 3DS games that were affected, but with these two being the last major Wii U games, it took them longer. They probably weren't sure how to handle it tbh, deciding whether or not it was even worth patching.

I guess the most interesting thing to me is that they actually took the effort to fix these issues and put the games back online, meaning they likely have no plans to permanently shut down the servers anytime in the near future. If they did, they probably would have just let them die here and now.

In their official announcement they said that if another thing happens that affects the online service (e.g. a new exploit) then they're pulling the plug for good.
