They were taken offline back in March "to address a vulnerability related to online play" that's now been fixed.

Oh, I didn't even know that they were taken down. I did know that a vulnerability was recently discovered in many Wii U/3DS games that allowed hackers to get into your system just be being connected to the internet while playing those games, even if you aren't playing online, but I thought they had all been fixed.

I was actually also aware that Splatoon 1 does indeed still have a small but active playerbase in 2023, though I'm guessing this might have more or less killed it.

I guess the most interesting thing to me is that they actually took the effort to fix these issues and put the games back online, meaning they likely have no plans to permanently shut down the servers anytime in the near future. If they did, they probably would have just let them die here and now.

I think it is. They already patched all the Switch and 3DS games that were affected, but with these two being the last major Wii U games, it took them longer. They probably weren't sure how to handle it tbh, deciding whether or not it was even worth patching.

In their official announcement they said that if another thing happens that affects the online service (e.g. a new exploit) then they're pulling the plug for good.

When they do shut down, I hope they bring the remaining Splat1 stages that aren't in 2 or 3 over to 3. There are still a few great holdouts.
