While TCW (CGI) was by all accounts made with the idea that it wasn't beholden to the old expanded universe, it was also meant to fill in the time gaps in the 2D series. Hence why many of the characters are basically 3D renderings of their character designs in Tartakovsky's series. edit: but as far as George was concerned, he didn't care.
