With the game being a return to the 2D style, they could have doubled down on the nostalgia by saying "not only is this a return to the style of Sonic from your childhood, this is a return of the rivalry of your childhood." They could have absolutely blitzed the "Mario Vs Sonic, which side are you on?" 90s vibe in the marketing and cleared up.
