TopicI saw a news story just now about fire drills in elementary schools

oh man, this just reminded me that my elementary school had the weirdest drills
-fire drill, basically the same as you described. the school building was surrounded by "the black top" which was concrete, and we'd basically walk into the grass + woods right beyond that
-tornado drill, teachers would close the steel gates behind the windows (like what store fronts have), and we'd all go into the center room of the building
-post-911, we'd have the "hide in place" drill, where all the lights were turned off, doors locked, and we'd all gather under a giant red frowny face taped to the ceiling
-flood drill, the custodial staff would cut the electricity of the building and students would have to sit on top of their desk to avoid getting taken away by the flash flood
-invader drill, similar to the "hide in place" drill, except we would be assigned a buddy and be required to hide under a desk instead of the giant red frowny face
-siren testing, happens monthly in my city*, but the school siren was tested once every other week. basically we would be outside playing at recess, and when the siren went off we had to find our buddy, go back to the classroom, and then do the invader drill

*when the city tests it, they only test to see if it works. we're not required to go inside, lol. that would be crazy.
