Phantom of the Opera

are probably the two standouts for old and new. that said:

Book of Mormon
The Lion King

would be the other main 2 that come to mind. the latter was basically proof that disney can make a legit broadway musical with their, well, animated musicals. since then they've had a number of them though nothing as impactful (and i hope the French Notre Dame one day goes there anyway). the former is another instance of pop culture (South Park) meeting the musical theater industry and being a ridiculous success and to this day still feels, and gets an audience, of a show for the everyman. if anything dressing up to see this award winner feels out of place and there's something to the casualization of broadway.

do have an honorable mention to Avenue Q as it honestly came out too early. it has clear hits with people online - songs of The Internet is for Porn, Everyone's a Little Bit Racist, they're both basically classic internet songs at this point. then again maybe it came out at the right time because launched Lopez's career before he went on to make Disney money by doing Frozen. in terms of overall impact this one might actually be top 4 it but the effects are too downwind. can't in good faith give it to Wicked as that's just too "broadway". it's the wrestler's wrestler pick over the audience.
