The size of the universe is so insanely huge that odds are there are other intelligent life somewhere out there. The universe of course being as vast as it is though? Odds are pretty decent that humanity will never find it. That is the fundamental intuition that is given by the drake equation. The only reason you can state that intuition as such is because somebody handwavily paramaterized it and then it got a lot of attention due to being sciency.
