mostly I disagree that we dont have the right to assault someone over words. Ill punch a fucking nazi for saying Nazi shit. If someone harms my partner emotionally and goes too far, Id be okay with someone hitting them too. Im largely a pacifist, but Im far from agreeing that violence is never the answer to anything. Especially violence that doesnt cause permanent harm. its very strange to me that the type of people who are most likely to say things like talk shit get hit and talk about shooting intruders and generally being totally okay with violence start clutching their pearls the moment will smith slaps someone.

As for the laugh, he likely wasnt even paying attention and was laughing politely. People are just on autopilot sometimes, especially at boring ass events like this. Then he saw his wife was upset and his brain caught up. Happens to me all the time. Thats one explanation at least.
