They would need to live there 10 years before they could think of taking possession of it. They are claiming to be tenants. In which case, if they can't produce a contract then it is considered a month to month lease (iirc) and they can be evicted within 30 days. Again, this is an inconvenience for the homeowner but if the squatter doesn't have a place to live, this could be life and death for them. If this drags out longer then that period because the courts are notoriously slow, then that's on the courts and not on the people inhabiting the house.
