I haven't seen a single new player have any investment in him as a villain whatsoever. They're using him way too much. FFVII took a "less is more" approach with Sephiroth. He's not actually in the original game that much, but they made almost every scene with him count. There's very little fluff any time he appears. As such, he's super memorable, and it feels like he's in the game a ton because you remember every time he shows up.
