Likely a combination of factors. With fewer shitposters crapping up topics, it becomes easier to have more meaningful engagement from the posters that are left. It becomes easier to find more topics that grab your interest. More real topics per page with fewer of the skippable topics cluttering up the place. There seems to be fewer argue trolls around, derailing topics. This could further encourage serious engagement.
