The only thing they do say is they regret using t-word, however it honestly wasn't really viewed negatively on a broad spectrum until like 2016 at best, as it was basically used as an abbreviation, rather than a slur itself.

I remember there was a mild explanation/joke about the word, I forget which show, it may have been a standup special, i don't recall, but basically someone was like, don't use that word, they were like why not, the person replied, because it'd be like calling you blacky, the comedian/main character was like, oh, well that makes sense. Educational humor is the best. For some reason I want to say it was Michael Che, but I couldn't find it.
Its more like using the N-word and that is definitely not some kind of recent development. Maybe for the people not on the receiving end tho
