If the cop is killed by the strongman then maybe not and they would be dead anyways so what does it change?

If the cop was targeting the strongman's target then why not? Scanning a corpse seems easy enough.

As someone who has never seen an episode of Community I wasn't expecting evil characters and alternate timelines

Yeah, it's pretty great. But it's not something that comes up in more than a handful of episodes so the entire show isn't really "about" that.

You should honestly watch season 3 episode 4, Remedial Chaos Theory. It's when the alternate timeline stuff begins and I think it's an episode anyone can enjoy even if they aren't familiar with the characters. You see the same small scenario play out half a dozen times so you learn enough from the repetitions.
