The most famous example being DBZ where everything after Freeza was basically an editorial mandate. Toriyama did "what some bigwig says" as you put it. We wouldn't have Androids 16,17,18, Cell, Goku coming back,.... if it weren't for a corporation telling Toriyama what they wanted to sell. This simply isn't true.
