You're gated more by story progress than money. In the NES version, yes, you needed to grind to at Elfheim to get swords and spells to everyone. In the earth kingdom, there was notably a suit of armor that was badass and fighter only but like more than triple what you had in your pockets. So more grinding in the Vampire or Lich cave, notably in a hallway which had a lot of gold-dropping Giants.
