It has nothing to do with the store itself. The super-tl;dr is that it's evolved from a meme subreddit trying to punish a hedge fund for taking a risky short position on Gamestop stock to a bizarre kind of apocalypse cult where they're trying to drive the stock price up so high that somehow it makes the banks collapse and then the government is forced to pay them all the money for some reason.

These are people who have staked their entire financial existence on the prospect of crippling the global economy in the hopes that the resulting collapse will make them rich. It makes exactly as much sense as it sounds.
